COLLABORATION: WARHOL & BASQUIAT

 

COLLABORATION: WARHOL & BASQUIAT is a new full-length play written by Tony Award nominee and Theatre World Award winner, Calvin Levels. This dramatic portrait depicts the artistic and personal relationship between two of the 20th Century’s greatest artists, the iconic Pop artist Andy Warhol and the Neo-expressionist painter Jean-Michel Basquiat. It captures an historic art-world moment as they attempt to navigate the perilous terrain of art and fame while collaboration on a joint series of paintings for their New York City gallery exhibiton. 

Directed by Lonny Price. ( 2016 London and 2017 Broadway revivals of SUNSET BOULEVARD, starring Glenn Close; 2017 English National Opera's revival of CAROUSEL; 2017 London revival and the Broadway production of LADY DAY AT EMERSON'S BAR AND GRILL, starring six-time Tony Award winner Audra McDonald; 110 IN THE SHADE, starring Audra McDonald; "MASTER HAROLD"...AND THE BOYS, starring Danny Glover: A CLASS ACT; and VISiTNG MR. GREEN, starring Eli Wallach.) He is the recipient of the Emmy Award, Theatre World Award, Obie Award, Drama League Award, Tony Award nomination and New York Film and Video Festival Best Director of a Drama Award. 

COLLABORATION: WARHOL & BASQUIAT was presented as a showcase production (without critical review) at HERE’s Mainstage Theatre, located in New York’s SoHo district. The play received overwhemingly positive response from audiences who were moved to laughter and tears, and completely engaged. Attendees called it a "Masterpiece" and  insisted "It must be shared with future audiences."  The cast featured Calvin Levels, Ira Denmark and Frank van Putten.
